The Anti-Resolution Approach To Change

Last Updated: November 18, 2024

The idea of waiting until the calendar flips to begin a transformation can feel overwhelming, especially when winter days are short, dark, and filled with post-holiday exhaustion. Instead of setting yourself up for failure by joining the “New Year, New Me” bandwagon, I encourage you to consider an anti-resolution approach.

Why January Isn’t the Best Time for Change

January often lacks the right energy for meaningful change. Many people are recovering from the holiday season, facing sickness and dreary weather, and feeling pressured to do all the things at once.

This pressure can make it hard to maintain new habits, especially when life gets tough.

So why wait for January at all? The truth is, you can start fresh anytime, and the best time to quit bad habits—like pornography—isn’t dependent on the calendar. It’s based on your readiness, the support you have, and the tools you’re equipped with.

It’s Not About When, It’s About How

When it comes to quitting porn, the most crucial factor isn’t when you start, but how you start.

You need the right tools in place: God’s Word, solid boundaries, and relationships that hold you accountable. These are the pillars that will sustain your journey, no matter the time of year.

God’s Word offers wisdom and strength, reminding you that you’re not walking this road alone. Strong relationships provide accountability and encouragement when the temptation feels overwhelming. Boundaries, on the other hand, help create safe spaces that protect you from falling back into old patterns.

If you have these three essentials in place, the best time to quit porn is right now—whether it’s summer, spring, winter, or fall.

The Power of Relationships, God’s Word, and Boundaries

You don’t need the “right time” or the perfect moment to change your life. You need the right tools:

  • Relationships: Surround yourself with people who will walk alongside you—those who aren’t afraid to check in, pray with you, and offer encouragement on tough days. Accountability partners and support groups are key to your success.
  • God’s Word: Scripture reminds you of your worth, your purpose, and your ability to overcome. Meditate on verses that speak to purity, freedom, and God’s strength. This is your anchor on the hardest days.
  • Boundaries: Put guardrails in place to protect yourself from falling back into temptation. These boundaries could be physical (like installing Covenant Eyes on your devices) or mental (like understanding your personal triggers). They create a safe environment for your growth.

Start Now: The Anti-Resolution Mindset

Instead of waiting for the “perfect” time to begin your recovery after the holidays, embrace the anti-resolution mindset.

Start when you’re ready, and don’t let the calendar dictate your journey. Focus on getting the right tools in place and lean on God’s strength to see you through.

The best time to quit porn is now. Not because of what the calendar states but because you’re ready to live free. Step into the life God has called you to—surrounded by supportive relationships, guided by His Word, and equipped with healthy boundaries. With these tools in place, you’re ready to make a lasting change at any time.
