“Justice Week” on Covenant Eyes Radio – Episode 114
[powerpress]
All this week we are exploring the issue of sex trafficking, hearing the stories of ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things to combat this evil around the world.
When Theresa Flores was 15 years old, she was drugged and raped by a boy she knew. Photos were taken of her sexual encounter and with these she was blackmailed, ultimately leading to her spending the next 2 years as a sex slave. All of this happened while living in an upper-middle-class suburb of Detroit.
Today, Ms. Flores is the Director of Education & Training at Gracehaven House, a care and rehabilitation home for young girls who have been victimized by human trafficking. She has been a social worker for over 20 years and is the author of The Slave Across the Street. Her story has been seen on news programs like The Today Show.
Theresa is a voice on behalf of the quarter-of-a-million American teens who are trafficked every year. She speaks with us today about her decades of experience working with teens who are at-risk for sexual exploitation, at times in the most unlikely of places. She talks about why it is so hard for many well-to-do Americans to believe that sexual exploitation might be happening right under their nose in their own communities.
Today’s interview is conducted by Mary Ann Jiang, an intern at pureHOPE.
Music for today’s podcast is “It’s Slavery” by Ten Shekel Shirt.
