Promise Keepers and the Battle for Sexual Freedom

Last Updated: March 25, 2024

Since 1990, Promise Keepers has been the host of major gatherings of Christian men. Starting this summer, Promise Keepers will be continuing the legacy.

The identity of men and the concept of manhood itself are in confusion today. Who and what defines a man? What gives him purpose and meaning?

American anthropologist, Margaret Mead, once said, “The central problem of every society is to define appropriate roles for the men.” Philosopher Thomas Carlyle summed it up when he said, “Show me the man you honor, and I will know what kind of man you are, for it shows me what your ideal of manhood is and what kind of man you long to be.”

Manhood ’08

Promise Keepers Manhood ’08 Conferences are aimed to help men in the church find a Biblical picture of manhood. Through six sessions, these conferences will equip men with keys to understand and fight the battles they face:

#1: “The Battle for Eternity” – Until a man faces the reality of his own sinful condition apart from God, he lives a self-centered, self-absorbed life governed by his own thinking and susceptiblity to the deceptive thinking of the world and the dark enemy of his soul.

#2: “The Battle for Truth” – Today’s culture embraces progressively relativistic and narcissistic perspectives towards truth. But the Bible is objective, definitive, absolute truth. It is the only fully inspired-by-God collection of recordings, stories and writings that together capture the thoughts and Words of God with integrity, accuracy, conviction and life.

#3: “The Battle for Godliness” – Men need help in relating sensibly to a sovereign God. Men need to be equipped with an understanding about how God relates to mankind.

#4: “The Battle for Freedom” – Sexual temptation and addiction among men is extensive. If God created sex, and sex is good from His perspective, how then can men with passion to to follow Jesus (in our sex-infused culture) understand the traps, free themselves from entrapment, and remain faithfully content in marriage or singleness?

#5: “The Battle for Priorities” – It’s not that we do not have choices or alternatives, but that we are saturated by a myriad of diversions. Men struggle with stewarding their time. They must overcome this struggle, in order to focus on essential priorities, rather than allowing distractions to clutter up their lives.

#6: “The Battle for Influence” – Think of a sphere of influence as a path a man travels regularly in a typical day in his life. In today’s world of technology and global travel, a man can engage others in cities worldwide in a short period of time. Men need help integrating their faith and love for God in how they think, live and relate within their sphere of influence.

Covenant Eyes is Going to Promise Keepers

Be on the lookout for the Covenant Eyes booth during the Manhood ’08 events. Also, be listening during “The Battle for Freedom” session for information about the Eye Promise program. This is essentially a seven-fold promise men can make about upholding accountability for what they view online, combined with the Covenant Eyes accountability reports:

  • Eye Promise to keep my eyes pure for Jesus Christ.
  • Eye Promise to be committed to a small group of men who desire to remain pure while using the Internet, and to help each other keep their promise of purity.
  • Eye Promise to uphold integrity in my spiritual, moral, and sexual walk while using the Internet.
  • Eye Promise to be committed to protecting and building a strong marriage and family by keeping my mind, heart, and eyes pure while using the Internet.
  • Eye Promise to be open and truthful with my accountability partners about what is on my Eye Promise report.
  • Eye Promise to accept encouragement and exhortation to stay away from harmful items on the Internet.
  • Eye Promise to help others overcome the battle of Internet temptation in their lives.
