A resolution introduced in the Utah State Legislature on Friday seeks to declare pornography a “public health crisis” and urges education and policy-change to battle it. Covenant Eyes applauds Utah’s effort to recognize this growing health concern linked to many societal ills.
“Designating pornography as a public health crisis accurately describes what porn is doing to our society and culture,” said Ron DeHaas, founder of Covenant Eyes, an Internet Accountability and Filtering company. “A recent, ground-breaking survey, The Porn Phenomenon, showed most teens and young adults believe ‘not recycling’ is worse than viewing pornography and that nearly half of young adults thought that forced or violent sex acts in pornography were not immoral. At a time when nearly every family has been touched by the harms of pornography, this designation of a health crisis treats the problem the way it should be.”
Covenant Eyes is co-sponsoring a global summit with Josh McDowell Ministry in April that will deal with the porn epidemic. More data from The Porn Phenomenon survey will be released at the Set Free Summit and will strengthen the argument that we are at public health crisis levels. In addition to attending the Set Free Summit, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation has a series of Action Steps to show your support.
This is encouraging news. Everyone needs to contact their representatives locally and nationally and encourage them to introduce similar legislation in their various legislative bodies.
