Covenant Eyes accountability software is often mistaken for keystroke logging (often called “keylogging”) software. This sort of program intercepts all the keystrokes you’ve made on your computer, including sensitive information such as login names, passwords, and credit card numbers.
Covenant Eyes does not do any sort of keylogging. Covenant Eyes only monitors the URL in the address bar of your Web browser. We do not monitor or record any private information.
At times we do monitor and report what someone types into a search engine (such as Google or Yahoo), but this is because the terms searched for appear in the URL after the search is made. For example, if I open Internet Explorer and search for “coffee” on Google, the URL that appears in the address bar is:
Notice that the word “coffee” appears at the end of the URL. This is how we are able to monitor what is searched for in a web browser.
Rest assured, if you use Covenant Eyes we cannot record any private information. There are, however, keylogging and spyware programs out there that can compromise your security. For more information go to www.OnGuardOnline.gov and find out about how you can protect yourself.
