I’m very excited to announce the release of a brand new iPhone® app from Covenant Eyes called Overcome Porn: The 40 Day Challenge.

We’ve compiled some of the best advice we’ve published about breaking free from pornography into a 40-day program that has already shown itself helpful to thousands of people.

We initially released the program as a series of 40 e-mails. Nothing flashy; just 40 days of educational material, all focused on biblical strategies for freedom. Over and over we heard the same thing: “This material is great, but I would love to be able to digitally track my progress in this program.”

So, our developers have been working hard over the last couple months to bring you this new app, Overcome Porn.

App Features

  • 40 lessons, walking participants through biblical principles of freedom
  • Take notes about important take-aways from each lesson
  • Track your purity goals each day
  • Track trends in behavior over time
  • Share your progress with others

Why 40 days?

There no magic to the number 40, no research on “forming a habit in 40 days” or anything like that. There’s no deep design behind it.

We are, however, mirroring a pattern we see in the Bible. Often, 40 days was the time period chosen by God as an intense period of seeking Him, testing, and cleansing—always followed by a period of blessing and new beginnings.

  • The Flood waters washed away the sin of the world over a period of 40 days (Genesis 7:4).
  • On two occasions, Moses met with God on Mt. Sinai for 40 days, fasting and intensely praying (Exodus 24:18; 34:28; Deuteronomy 9:18,25).
  • Angels delivered a special meal to Elijah which strengthened him for a 40-day journey into the wilderness to meet God at Mt. Sinai (1 Kings 19:8).
  • God gave Nineveh 40 days to repent of their sins (Jonah 3:4).
  • Jesus fasted 40 days in the wilderness during which he was tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:2; Mark 1:13; Luke 4:2).
  • Jesus remained on earth for 40 days after his resurrection, speaking to his disciples about the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3), culminating in his ascension to heaven.

Like the city of Nineveh, we want Overcome Porn to facilitate a time of repentance. Like in the time Noah, we want this 40-day challenge to be a time of cleansing. Like Moses, we want this challenge to be a time of powerful prayer. Like Elijah, we want Overcome Porn to be a journey, a time when your heart is tested or refined. Like the disciples, we want the challenge to be a time where you meet Jesus in a unique way.

It badly needs a new name. I don’t want an app on my phone labeled “Overcome Porn.” Seriously? It would be better even if it was just labeled “Covenent Eyes.” I love this idea, but I won’t put it on my phone with that name.

      • JW

I agree, the name would be better if changed to Covenant Eyes.

      • Lisa Eldred

JW, Understood. But don’t worry; the word “Porn” will not appear under the app icon.

      • Lisa Eldred

Jason, our main browser app is already called Covenant Eyes, so we wanted to do something different. But don’t worry…we did realize people would have that issue! On your phone, it will show up simply as “Overcome.”

      • Braxton

I agree. The name is atrocious. Also, it’s a huge turn-off that it’s not a free app. I understand the coding is a lot of work. However, as a coder myself, if I were put to the task, I would definitely treat it as an act of charity. Offering my skills and service to the Lord. I may still get it, despite the embarrassing name AND cost, simply because I’m not a fan of being tied to such an activity, even if I didn’t consider it to be sinful, though I do. But it would be a no-brainer and I would do it immediately if it weren’t for the name and charge. Basically no one sees my phone beside me, so the charge is more bothersome to me than the name, but you get the point.

Wish I could enjoy it but don’t have a smart phone :(

      • BH

The video links are not working on my app (iPhone 5). The first day’s video worked, but I’ve had to google the next two day’s videos. Help??

      • Chris Dyer

This is just a comment with regards to charging for the app. Wouldn’t a compromise be to offer the app free if you are already signed to covenanteyes? If you are just checking apps for help, well $.99 isn’t much, but since you’ve committed to the software and, in my case the filter too, throw in the app! Best of both worlds:-)

      • John moon

I am very interested in this but I have a android phone

      • When the app comes out for andriod phones will those who own andriod phones be offered the .99 cent deal. Or is that only for iPhone and those with andriods miss out

      • PW du Toit

Hi there, I am happy to see that you are getting diversified on your technology platforms.

I have an iPhone 4, (Which I think is still an acceptable phone model for today’s age.) but there is a problem,
my phone cannot update the IOS higher than 7.1.2, I very much want this app but the minimum requirement is IOS 8,
and thus my model is incompatible, and I fear that there won’t be a compatible version by the time the release special will end…

Will there be a compatible version in the future?

      • JMM

Thank you and thank God for your efforts to help people find freedom from this particular bondage. I am a mother to two young teenage boys. Both have experienced porn. By God’s grace they came to us and asked for help. I would like to receive via email as my kids do not have smart phones. Also, I will happily pay this nominal fee. It is true – human nature really, that people value things, they invest in. Can someone contact me at my email address and let me know how to set up for email access? Thank you

      • Lisa Eldred

Hey all, lots of great thoughts here! I just wanted to take a few moments to answer some of the more common questions:

        1. If you’re having problems with the video content not loading, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Unfortunately, you will lose your journal data, so you might want to copy your answers into a different app first (like notes, or into an e-mail to yourself or your Accountability Partner).

        2. For those of you who have requested the Android version, we’re hoping to get it out this year.

        3. For those who prefer e-mail (including Android users and users of the old version), we are likely to reopen the e-mail version in the next week or two.

        I hope that helps!

      • Linda

PLEASE resurrect the e-mail version! My husband nor I have a smartphone of any kind! We will even pay for it :)

      • Ridge

I love the app! It is so similar to a book that has the same concept of daily tasks, thought provoking topics and journaling to help overcome an addiction to pornography. I also think that those who are truly committed to overcoming this trial in their lives, the fee for the app is an incredibly small price to pay for something that can help so immensely!

My only thought on how to make this app better is for those who have internet accessibility blocked completely on their phone. These people are unable to access the videos that sometimes accompany the action steps. Perhaps there could be some way they could know the URL for these clips so that they could be accessed on a covenant eyes monitored computer?

      • Chris McKenna

@Ridge, thank you for your feedback on the app! We have an update scheduled in a few months that includes easier ways to access web-based content. We hadn’t thought about those who have web access completely turned off, but I’ll bring that up in our next app meeting. Be well! Stay strong.

        Peace, Chris

      • Aaron Brown

So overcoming porn is only in itunes??? So android users are left out in the cold???

      • Sales Fernandes

i like the word covenant eyes
        Thanks

    2. Tyrone

I’ve started using the app, but none of the links are working on day one, so I can’t add a partner and the Matt Fradd video doesn’t show up on day two. If I delete and re-install, will I need to pay the $1.99 again?

      • Brad Willard

Once you own an app, it’s yours to download and reinstall as needed. This applies to both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Just search for it again and you’ll see that it’s already been purchased and just needs re-downloaded.

    3. Mark

JW I thought the same thing. You could also put this in a folder in your phone so others are less likely to see it. Awesome idea guys. Downloading today and having my results sent to my spiritual advisor!!

    4. A

Great app, but not happy that almost all the action videos don’t show up. Often have to search them on YouTube instead, but a few of them aren’t available there. Please fix this!

      • Lisa Eldred

Hi A, not sure if you saw this elsewhere, but if you uninstall and reinstall the app they should show up now. Sorry about that!

    5. bryan vaño

i can’t find the app in the app store. is there something worng?

      • Lisa Eldred

Bryan, that’s strange. What term are you using to search?

One thing you can do is search for “Covenant Eyes.” It will probably bring up our browser app. Click on the developer name and you should see this one.

    6. Scott Sailer

Are the daily videos contained in the app? I haven’t found them after the first day. I am looking them up on Youtube. Thanks!

      • Lisa Eldred

Scott, have you uninstalled and reinstalled yet?

    7. JL

This is great, thanks! But for those not using either an iPhone or Android phone (yes, I know there are not many left but we are still out there!), are we still able to get access to this information/program?

      • Lisa Eldred

JL, by popular request we expect to reopen the e-mail version later this month.

    8. Lance

Guys the app won’t play the video on my iPhone 5s. I get the next button and immediately move to the “write down things from today’s lesson” screen. This isn’t very helpful because I can’t answer the question.

      • Lisa Eldred

Lance, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app yet?

    9. Joe

I bought the 40 day but no videos work. Feeling very disappointed.

      • Lisa Eldred

Joe, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app yet?

    10. Nate

Any thoughts on getting this app on the Amazon app store for kindle devices? That would be great. I’d still love to see CE work out a way to bring accountability to browsing and purchasing on the the kindle books and instant video apps if that would ever be possible.

      • Lisa Eldred

Hi Nate, it’s likely that when we make this app available for Android, it will work on Kindle as well. Stay tuned!

As for your other request, our Accountability App for Android monitors many popular apps. I suggest making a request in our Help Forum to get it prioritized with the developers.

    11. JT

I’ve tried to start using this app on my iPhone 6 but the audio in the videos do NOT work. I can’t hear anything. I tried to delete the app & started over. At least it wasn’t blank, after Day 1. I can see the videos and read the content below but I can’t hear the audio still. Any idea when that will be fixed? In reading comments on this blog & reviews in the App Store, it looks like several are having the same issues.

      • Lisa Eldred

JT, do you keep your phone on silent (e.g. vibrate only)? I had the same reaction when I downloaded it, and just had to flip the physical switch on my phone off silent mode to hear the sound.

    12. Gregg

Yes, NONE of the videos are showing up. Didn’t think about searching for them on youtube but kind of defeats the purpose of the app if you have to go somewhere else to see the video.

      • Lisa Eldred

Gregg, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app yet?

    13. Tony

      Most videos won’t show up|

      • Lisa Eldred

Tony, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app yet?

    14. Anowe Godspower

i will like to take on the email version of the 40 day challenge

      • Lisa Eldred

Look for an announcement later this month. :)

    15. Tyrone McKenzie

I Cannot get any of the videos to play except for day 1. This is very frustrating. Should I delete the app and try to install again? If so, will I be charged each time I install?

      • Lisa Eldred

Yep, uninstall and reinstall. You won’t be charged again, don’t worry.

    16. Matt

Yeah, I think it’d be great to resurrect the email version for those who don’t have smart phones. Why not? The more accessible the content is, the better.

      • Lisa Eldred

Matt, look for announcement this month.

    17. JL

Yes, please resurrect your e-mail version of the 40-day challenge. Thanks!

      • Lisa Eldred

JL, look for an announcement later this month.

    18. MT

      Videos not working

      • Lisa Eldred

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app?

    19. Donald

I saw where email version was coming soon (?), cool! Please let us know….I want in. By the way, starting off the New Year right…13 days “clean”.

    20. Doug

This should be a stand alone app. There are times I have no internet connection with my iPad and I want to read and or watch to strengthen me through the day.

      • Lisa Eldred

Doug, we looked into that, and may revisit in a future update. Right now, though, if we were to host all of the videos in the app itself, it would eat up half your phone’s storage.

If it helps, we do have several e-books you can download and read on your iPad.

    21. Deanna

We tried to find the app, couldn’t find it. Found we had to upgrade ios, upgraded… Which took a long time. Finally found the app, only to discover that the deal had expiredhalf an hour before in eastern time, but we are in mountain time. We thought we had another hour and a half. The whole experience was frustrating. After all that, walked away without the app.

    22. D

      Is this coming to Android?

      • Lisa Eldred

Hopefully later this year! We haven’t started development on it yet, though.

    23. Kevin Moore

I am needing this app for my android phone, PLEASE MAKE IT POSSIBLE! !

      • Chris McKenna

Hello Kevin, we are definitely aware of the demand for an Android solution. We are likely going to re-start the email version for our Android users soon, in lieu of the Android app. Are you interested in this?

    24. Kevin Moore

I already have covenant eyes on my phone, it would be awesome if this app would be offered to all who have already been paying for covenant eyes.

    25. Daniel Hofstetter

Get your heads out of the sand and start writing decent apps for Android please!

      • Chris McKenna

Daniel, did you try the email version of “Overcome”?

    26. Daniel Hofstetter

No, Chris, I did not know about it. Thanks for the info. Perhaps my first comment was a bit brash. However, it frustrates me that CE does not put much focus on Android when in reality Android is a very good operating system with lots of users, including people who need the kind of protection and accountability CE provides. I hope that CE realizes this and continues to improve their Android offering.

    27. James

Open up the email aspect, or better yet make it into one of those great ebooks that we can download and print out. I would even pay for the ebook. It does seem counterintuitive to me to have it in an APP when I am struggling already, and then have that I can’t watch the videos because they are on restricted sites (if your phone is blocked accordingly) Just my thoughts, but please email or ebook.
      Thanks,

      • Chris McKenna

Hi James, we are going to fire up the email version again when we release some pretty significant updates to the app in August. If you’re connected to our blog, and also through our communications with current members, you’ll be made aware of it.
        Peace, Chris

    28. Joe

Any word on the Android app for the Challenge? You said in January 2016 you hoped to have the Android app out that in that year, but now it’s 2017. I love the challenge and keep recommending it to people, but with the vast majority of people using Android it’s unfortunate that the app is only on iPhone.

      • Chris McKenna

Hello, Joe – we are no longer planning to release an Android version of the Challenge, but the e-mail version is very good. Would you mind recommending that to your Android friends?

        Peace, Chris

    29. Warren

Hello. I purchased Overcome Porn: The 40 Day Challenge in itunes today. However, I cannot open this in a microsoft pc. I just wasted $2.99.

Do you have an app for a PC?

    30. Krishna S Iyengar

Any idea when the Android app will be released? I saw comments from back in 2016 where a representative said the app will be out in 2016. Thank you so much for the wonderful resources! I’m really like Covenant eyes so far.

      • Amanda Powell

        Hi Krishna,

The Android app is available. You can download the app right from the Google Play Store. Please let us know if we can help with anything else.

    31. Sean C Witmer

      Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know that on the app, under the action tab of each day is now blank. I’ve tried closing and reopening, tried uninstalling and installing it. But the content is no longer available to me. Would love to finish the program but will have to find something else if it’s not resolved quickly.

      Thanks for your help,
      Sean

      • Robert Baxter

Thanks for reaching out. We noticed this issue late on Friday (5/7/21) and we’re taking a closer look at it. We intend to roll out a fix soon. If that fix doesn’t happen soon enough for you, I’d encourage you to consider strive21.com. It has similar content to and is free like Overcome, but it is not hosted in an app.
