Which Filter Sensitivity Level is right for me or my family?

A filter that grows with your kids…

Covenant Eyes uses a proprietary technique to analyze and filter websites based on a scale of recommended age appropriateness. This analysis is translated into ratings for every web page, such as Y for Youth, T for Teen, and M for Mature.

You select how sensitive the Filter is for each family member, and that allows the Covenant Eyes Filter to grow with your kids. You may adjust time controls, and create your own lists of sites to block or allow for each person.

NOTE: The Filter is only available for Windows.

What are the Filter Sensitivity Levels? Which one should I use?

We can’t tell you which level to choose. You know your family’s needs best. We can make recommendations, like what you see below, but it’s up to you to decide the standards of your household and the maturity level of your kids.

If you have more than one person in your household, you’ll be more successful if each member has a separate username, which allows for custom Accountability and Filtering settings. Learn more about usernames.

Covenant Eyes offers six Filter Sensitivity Levels:

R (Restricted)

A Restricted user can only view sites specifically allowed by the Filter Guardian. It also allows the CovenantEyes.com website. This setting is particularly appropriate for very young children.

E (Everyone)

This setting blocks anything that is not considered appropriate for everyone. This setting is fitting for young children.

Y (Youth)

This setting blocks any site rated higher than Y. The sites allowed at this setting are generally appropriate for all ages, but some parents might object to these sites for children under 10.

T (Teen)

This setting blocks any site rated higher than T. Sites allowed are generally appropriate for adults and teens, but parents might object to these sites for children under 13.

At this level in particular, if you haven’t already made your child an Accountability User in addition to a Filter User, we recommend adding the Accountability service. By using these two services in conjunction, you not only block what’s inappropriate, but you also can start good conversations about what content is and is not appropriate online.

MT (Mature Teen)

This blocks sites rated higher than MT. Depending on your teen’s maturity level, you may adjust the filter to this as early as age 16, or wait until they are 18 or 19.

M (Mature)

Only those websites rated HM (Highly Mature) are blocked at this level. This is most appropriate for adult users of the Covenant Eyes Filter.
