We Thought Filters Were Enough…

The temptations disappeared with Covenant Eyes’ Software…

 Families

When we first started using the Internet, our ISP had a filter that we could enable that was designed for parents to control the sites that their children visited.  That seemed to work for us, but a neighbor kid found a way around it, and pretty soon all of the kids knew the trick.

So we bought a filter that was supposed to be the best out there.  It drove us nuts!  I was doing research on a vacation to England, and it blocked me from the sites I wanted to go to.  And to make matters worse, when I did an image search on one of the tourist sites in London, half the images that came up were pornography!

As time went on, filters got a little better.  I tried 4 or 5 of them. In the meantime, my 11-year old grew up to be a 16-year old, and without my knowing it, had found some simple ways around every one of the filters.  He had been viewing pornography for over a year!  The false comfort of the filter proved to be a stumbling block in our relationship.  I trusted that he was OK; he was too ashamed to talk about it.  So we never talked. Finally, I heard about Covenant Eyes through our church.  I installed it, and now I get a report every week on my son’s activity.  I don’t use the Internet much, but my wife gets my report--I’m certainly not immune from temptation.  My son says he’s tried a bunch of ways to get around Covenant Eyes (“just checking it out for you, dad”), and hasn’t been able to.  Now, instead of avoiding the subject, we have weekly talks about the dangers and the wrongs of pornography.

Those talks are some of the best times of my life!  He and I are really friends now.  In fact, I’ve added him as one of my accountability partners, and he appreciates the fact that I’m transparent with him.
