Covenant Eyes for iPhone User Guide

Covenant Eyes provides an accountability solution for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. This app is an Internet browser, which you can use as you would Safari. It works somewhat like our other accountability services for the PC, Mac, and Windows Mobile devices in that it isn't a filtered browser, but instead simply monitors everywhere you go online, scoring each Web address for mature content. It then sends a detailed report to the "Accountability Partner(s)" you choose, such as a friend, a spouse, a mentor, etc.

While we strive to provide the same level of accountability on every platform, Apple’s restrictions on application development means that Covenant Eyes for the iPhone requires some additional configuration after installation.

Installing Covenant Eyes

Covenant Eyes for iPhone is available as “Covenant Eyes” on Apple's iPhone App Store.

Tips for More Effective Accountability

Because of the nature of the iPhone, it is impossible to provide the same level of accountability as our Windows, Mac, and Windows Mobile applications. One of the shortfalls is that we are not able to monitor Safari, YouTube or other applications on the iPhone. So, in order to increase your level of accountability we recommend having your Accountability Partner set up your iPhone to use Apple's “Restrictions” feature. The two recommended options are disabling Safari and YouTube as well as disabling installation of additional applications.

Getting to iPhone Restriction Settings

To get to the restrictions menu launch the “Settings” app from your iPhone and select the icon labeled “General”. See Figure A for more info.

Next you will want to select the option labeled “Restrictions”. To turn Restrictions on tap the button labeled “Enable Restrictions”. The iPhone will then ask you to set a four-digit passcode for controlling restrictions. We recommend having your Accountability Partner set this code for maximum accountability.

Next you should set your device to disable Safari, YouTube, and other applications which may allow access to objectionable material.

Disabling Safari and YouTube.

To disable Safari or YouTube, navigate to the Restrictions menu and then swipe their toggle from “On” to “Off”.

Disabling Installation of Applications

There are two ways to disable installing of applications.

  1. Disable the App Store
    1. navigate to the restrictions menu
    2. toggle “Installing Apps” to “Off”
  2. Have your Accountability Partner change your Apple ID password to one that you do not know
    1. follow Apple's instructions on changing your Apple ID account
    2. disadvantage: you won't be able to purchase items from iTunes without your Accountability Partner

Don't do this: You might have considered blocking the installation of new iPhone applications based upon their App store rating. However, due to the fact that Covenant Eyes for iPhone is not a filter, it must be rated at 17+. Disabling applications rated 17+ would then disable Covenant Eyes.
