Some thoughts on Groundhog Day
For good reason, those of us who live in the Midwest United States are getting anxious about the outcome of Groundhog Day. Will the groundhog see its shadow, or not… will winter go on for another month, or not? This has been one of the snowiest winters in many years, so many of us, even those who like winter, are ready for a nice July day!
But that brings up a different thought about Groundhog Day. There seems to be some confusion about Groundhog Day being the same as Marmot Day. Groundhogs are, of course, technically marmots, as are woodchucks, etc. But Groundhog Day and Marmot Day are two different days. Marmot Day is July 25 (or, if it falls on a weekend, the next Monday) and is celebrated right here in Owosso, Michigan. Groundhog Day, on the other hand, is February 2, and is celebrated in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
I’m sure that you’re glad to be aware of the distinction!!
