Message from the President of Covenant Eyes:
“In specific, the program is perfect for parental observation—I started the program specifically to monitor my own teenaged sons, and it has worked marvelously. NOTE that ‘accountability’ means the parents should take the time to review their children’s use, and they should also ask the basic questions, like ‘have you found other ways to view pornography,’ etc. In other words, people should not look to the Covenant Eyes Program as a substitution for good parenting.
“But the Covenant Eyes Program is virtually ‘bullet-proof.’ It cannot be just turned off (by ctrl+alt+del, or any other means). Sharp users over the years have found some tricky ways around the program, but we have modified the program to block even those efforts. To uninstall the program, an Uninstall Code is required (a process for which we have a patent pending), and when that code is obtained, the Accountability Partners (in this case, the parents) are notified. (Another note here—the parents should have a unique email address that the teen can’t access)
“As for P-2-P, we detect most P-2-P activity, but not all. Each P-2-P program uses its own Internet protocol, and some are difficult to monitor. Typically, we detect and report that a P-2-P program has been used, but generally cannot score it because it is entirely graphic in nature, and our scoring is based on text. The major programs, kazaa, and morpheus, are picked up by our P-2-P detection, and all such use is at least recorded. We have just added a new feature to the program that will simply allow the blocking of any non-detected programs.
“Like I said, the parents still need to parent—there is always the possibility of going to the library to view pornography, etc., but Covenant Eyes is a great way of protecting the home computers. We have had many users who found their young teenaged son being lured into pornography, but were stopped early enough thanks to the Covenant Eyes program.”
