Compare Covenant Eyes to Other Internet Accountability and Filters

You are here: Home Page / about / compare

Filters:

Many people use filters as a means of blocking objectionable sites. However, there are two disadvantages with filters, both of which are overcome by the accountability provided by Covenant Eyes:

  1. Most filters are quite easy to get around, or circumvent. Also, most filters block sites you really want to see. And, with most filters, at least one member of the household has a password or "key" to unlock the filter so that objectionable sites can be viewed - that person can easily and completely avoid accountability.
  2. Filters do not provide training in discipline on the Internet-Accountability provides training in self-control, and Covenant Eyes builds self-control and self-discipline. As the editor of New Man Magazine said, the Covenant Eyes Program "sucks the life out of temptation" on the Internet.

Many users use both a filter (to block access for young children) plus the Covenant Eyes Program for older users. While we do work with several filters (please write info@covenanteyes.com for the latest list of compatible filters). Covenant Eyes is also in consideration of offering its own filter. If you wish to be added to our list for notification should a filter become available, please write us at the above email address.

Keystroke Monitors:

Another option is a program which completely monitors all keystrokes and screen shots on your computer. But these are very cumbersome to use-you need to sift through a lot of info, which can take hours for the accountability partner. What usually ends up happening is that the accountability partner really doesn't do his/her job because it is such an overwhelming task.

Other voluntary accountability programs:

There are a couple of programs similar to, but less robust than, Covenant Eyes, and you can click on the links below to get a detailed comparison. One is free, the other has a comparable price (actually a little less for one user, a little more for two or more users). However, you pretty much get what you pay for. Many users who have tried both programs have settled on Covenant Eyes because other programs fall short of Covenant Eyes in their experience, scoring routines, ease of changing users, non-circumventability, and other areas.

For instance, if you use Windows XP, a simple "system restore" will allow you to circumvent all other voluntary accountability programs undetected, and unreported to your Accountability Partners. However, as a part of our patent-pending Uninstall Notification process, we detect and report the use of the "system restore" function on new versions of Windows.

Covenant Eyes is also the only program which monitors or detects file-sharing or newsgroups (a patent-pending process of Covenant Eyes). File-sharing and newsgroups are a very simple way of viewing pornography undetected by other voluntary accountability programs.
