Is the end of summer aleady here?

The marmot will let you know in Owosso.

by Kim Russell (from ConnectMidMichigan.com)

The nation turns to a furry rodent to find out whether winter will end. Why not carry the tradition on to summer?

Folks in Owosso are doing just that.

On Monday, July 27, 2009 folks will get together to celebrate Marmot Day in Owosso.

In case you aren’t in the know when it comes to species in the rodent family: groundhogs, woodchucks, and ground squirrels are all marmots.

The organizers of this Mid-Michigan celebration of marmots want to clear up some confusion. Their holiday is sometimes confused with Groundhog Day, as groundhogs are marmots. Do not make this mistake. The Owosso celebration is a distinct event.

You are invited to participate in this one of a kind event. Festivities take place at the grounds of Covenant Eyes, Inc. on West King Street in Owosso from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. There will be a barbeque lunch, a car show, a wood chucking contest, and marmot joke contest (after all, everyone has a good marmot joke, right?).

Just make sure you’re there at 12:45 p.m. sharp. That is when organizers say Mr. Marmot will “deliberate.”

If he goes into his hole, he has decided summer is over (did it ever really start this year?). If he doesn’t go into his hole, expect a hot six weeks.
