Murderers, Prostitutes, and Craigslist
Julissa Brisman was killed in a Boston hotel room while meeting with a man who had responded to an erotic massage ad on Craigslist. She advertised herself in the “Casual Encounters” section of the website. Craigslist generates more than 20 billion page views per month in 50 countries.
Below is a CNN report about the “Craiglist Killer” (about 8 minutes long):
This story highlights the importance of voluntary Internet accountability. Craigslist may advertise many, many legitimate services and products, but it can also be used to involve people in illicit sexual encounters.
When people want to be held accountable to where they go and what they see online, they download the accountability software and give the names and email addresses of one or two friends they trust: then a detailed Internet use report is sent to those friends. These people have taken away the secrecy of their Internet use, and thereby limited the temptation to engage in online sexual activity.
Covenant Eyes Internet Accountability has a dynamic rating system which will rate the content of a Web page for adult or mature content. Criagslist, for instance, might have a very low rating on most pages because the content there is benign. But the ratings on other pages can be very high because of the sensual services or relationships that are advertised.
