Podcast: The Power of Porn

Last Updated: March 25, 2024

The following is an mp3 of Gene McConnell’s talk “The Power of Porn,” given over six years ago at Ohio State University.

McConnell is a gifted and frank communicator who tells his heartbreaking story about the power of porn in his own life. You’ll hear about his first exposure to porn as a child, how he started selling porn at the age of 12, how he molested his own sister when he was 16, and how years of porn addiction led to all forms of acting out in adulthood: visiting strip clubs, sleeping with prostitutes, and nearly raping a young woman.

You’ll also hear about the chain of events that led to him leaving his life of sex addiction and turning towards a life centered on Christ.

Listen to “The Power of Porn”

McConnell essentially identifies porn as hate speech against women, playing a powerful role in shaping society’s views of the value of women. Far from sending out a cry for censorship, McConnell speaks to college students from a consumer’s perspective: porn is in demand, therefore it is supplied, and we have the “right” to consume it. But should we consume it?

This presentation is also geared towards women who struggle with “body shame,” often brought on by American media and advertising.

McConnell comes prepared with information about the pornography industry and a multimedia presentation about the use of sex in media and advertisement. In addition he also brings an ex-stripper, Kimberly Drake, forward to tell her story. Drake spent two years stripping in a club and lived thirteen years with a heavy drug and porn addiction.

NOTE: This presentation deals with mature subjects. It contains sound bites from interviews, music and movies that highlight hyper-sexualized American culture. Listener discretion is advised.
